Whether you live in Singapore or are visiting, dining at a Hawker Center is a big part of the culture and day-to-day living!
Navigating the options with wellness in mind may seem like a challenge but here are my top tips to help you make the better choice!
You’ll still enjoy every bite, and make the most of your meal!
- Soup, soup, and more soup! From Sliced Fish Soup to Pho to Yong Tau Foo, these soups are light, and have great protein and veg options.
- Request less or no noodles when enjoying your soup. Instead, ask for extra veg!
- Who doesn’t love chicken & rice??? My trick, ask for breast meat only to keep it lean. I always request double meat and as soon as I sit down half the rice portion. And don’t forget to get a side of Kai Lan or other local greens!
- Look for the Vietnamese or Thai stalls. You’re guaranteed to find delicious protein-packed salads like Larb Gai or Goi Ga. You will also find great steamed fish options.
- Avoid deep-fried foods. This is a no-brainer.
- Instead of sugary juices at the drink stall, go for natural fresh coconut water.
- Avoid heavy oily curry dishes. While I am all about getting good fats into your diet, most of the oils used at a hawker center will be vegetable oils we all want to avoid as much as possible!
- sequence your food. I recommend this when dining out in general. Start with some veg, move to protein, and finish with your carbs.
- watch your toppings – things like fried anchovies, fried shallots, fried garlic (key word being fried!) Can quickly make a healthy option, not so healthy. While you don’t have to skip these toppings completely (I love them too!) just go light on them!
- If doing dessert, do something light like beancurd and ginkgo nuts. If you want to indulge in something like ice kachang or cendol, SHARE IT!
I hope you found these tips helpful Singapore friends!!!
