chinese style steamed fish

THIS STEMED FISH IS SO SIMPLE TO PREP AND TASTES JUST LIKE WHAT YOU GET IN RESTAURANTS!

A delicious steamed Chinese style fish that takes minutes to prep and cook. It's perfect for weeknight meals!

I've been doing my best to get more protein into my diet but in ways that doesn't take a lot of effort and time.  This fish hits the mark!  It's flavorful, simple to prepare, and needs only a few simple ingredients.

For the fish I used barramundi but you can use any mild flavored white fish such as cod or halibut.

I love this fish paired with simple jasmine rice and a side of greens like broccoli or beans.  To make things even simpler, you can add your veg to the fish while its cooking!  Easy peasy!

If you like a more saucy fish, feel free to double the ingredients of the sauce.

For my plant based friends! This dish tastes amazing with tofu!!  Simply swap the fish for tofu and follow the instructions as is.

Chinese Style Oven Steamed Fish

A delicious and simple preparation for fish

PREPARATION TIME: 10 MIN COOKING TIME: 15 MIN TOTAL TIME: 25 MIN

INGREDIENTS

    Fish
    • 1 fish fillet white fish – cod, barramundi, etc.
    • 1 tsp sesame oil
    • salt to taste
    • 1/2 inch piece ginger, thinly sliced
    Sauce
      • 1 Tbsp water
      • 1 Tbsp coconut aminos
      • 2 tsp rice vinegar
      • 1/2 tsp sesame oil
      • 1 Dash of white pepper
    Garnish
      • chopped scallion
      • Chopped cilantro
      • Chopped red chili

    INSTRUCTIONS

    1. Preheat oven to 180℃/400F°.
    2. Place the fish fillet on a piece of parchment paper big enough to wrap the fish in.  Drizzle 1 tsp sesame oil and season with salt.
    3. Place the sliced ginger over the fish.
    4. Fold the parchment paper up over the bottom part of the fish, then fold it down to cover the top half of the fish. Roll and fold the sides of the paper down towards the fish, then tuck the parchment paper under each side of the fish to make a parcel.  You can also staple the paper if you find folding difficult.
    5. Place the wrapped fish on a baking sheet, and bake for 10 to 12 minutes.
    6. Test the fish doneness by flaking it with a fork. If it flakes easily, the fish is cooked; if the fish still looks translucent and resists flaking, place it back in the oven to cook fully.
    7. While your fish is cooking, prepare the sauce by combining all of the sauce ingredients.
    8. Once you fish is done, plate your fish, pour over your sauce and garnish with cilantro, scallions, and red chili.
    9. Serve immediately.

    NOTES:

For vegetarians & vegans , this works very well with tofu in place of fish!
